Rigging Wahoo Lures for High Speed Trolling
(00:21:55)The concept of wahoo rigs and how to rig wahoo lures is a hotly debated topic. When it comes to learning about lure rigging and the tackle to use, I also defer to those guys that have achieved success at the highest levels of the sport. Rick Redeker has, by all accounts, made a name for himself catching big wahoo and winning the biggest tournaments multiple times. He has a very exacting system for selectively targeting and catching big fish. His lures are distinctly different, also. In this rigging wahoo lures video, Rick is going to explain every lure, skirt, hook, cable, crimp, length of heat shrink and how he rigs wahoo trolling lures in a step by step fashion. This is a basic wahoo rig that Rick has had a lot of success with over the years. It is a little different that traditional wahoo rigs with heavier cable and hooks. He rigs this way for reasons he will explain. Rick will start by doing an inventory of all the ingredients he uses for rigging wahoo lures. He first profiles the stainless steel hook, cable and crimps that are the foundation for his hook set. Then you will see the glass head lure that serves as the base lure. He will discuss a few of the colors he likes in his skirts. Then you will see where he diverges by utilizing a Japanese feather and a 50 skirt that both go inside the base lure. This is very interesting and worth incorporating into your program. All the tools from cable cutters, mono cutters and heavy duty crimps are included, so you know what he is using. The rigging starts with the hook set. Rick starts by cutting his length of cable and crimping the hook on to it. He will show you how he achieves the desired cable rig before adding heat shrink. You will notice two different sizes of heat shrink being added to the rig. This provides some extra protection. Once the hook set is finished being assembled, Rick guides you through inserting the Japanese feather inside the 50 skirt and them adding them to the base glass head lure. With the hook added, you will see the preferred skirt length relative to the hook position. The last step is finishing off the rig at the top of the cable with a loop for attaching the cable to the shock cord. Rigging wahoo lures this way has earned Rick Redeker plenty of succcess.
